Lamb sales strong over Christmas but sales of other meats slow
Retail sales of lamb roasting joints grew over Christmas, bucking the decline in other meat categories, Kantar figures have revealed. Data for the four weeks to 26 December 2021 showed total lamb volumes rose by 0.9% on 2020’s record retail performance for red meat.

UK food exports to EU plummet through 2021
The UK’s food, drink and tobacco exports to the EU plummeted last year, according to European Commission data, falling from €14.1bn (£11.8bn) in January to November 2020 to €10.9bn (£9.1bn) over the same period last year.

Tiba Tempeh scores £500k seed funding to accelerate plant-based growth
Plant-based start-up Tiba Tempeh has closed a £500k seed funding round as it prepares to expand its distribution. The tempeh brand is already stocked by retailers including Ocado, Planet Organic and Whole Foods, and also supplies foodservice and recipe boxes.

Dimbleby: government won’t last a week if it brings in meat tax
National Food Strategy author Henry Dimbleby has warned the government “wouldn’t last a week” if it used taxes to try to reduce meat consumption. He said that while there were compelling environmental reasons for cutting meat consumption, a fiscal approach would prove too divisive.

Booths reports 6.5% sales growth over Christmas trading period
Booths has seen Christmas sales increase by 6.5%. The family-owned grocer also recorded total revenue growth of 4.3% as well as a retail like-for-like rise of 4.2% over the peak three-week trading period compared to 2020.

The Grocer Gold Awards 2022 opens for entries
The Grocer Gold Awards 2022 is now open for entries as the countdown to the June event at the Guildhall in London begins. Entrants have until 7 March to finalise their online submissions for this year’s categories, which range from Food Brand of the Year to Independent Retail Chain of the Year.
