Campbells of Leyburn Village Store Local Shop lr

Campbell’s of Leyburn is an independent family owned supermarket established in 1868 and this year they were crowned the winner of the Village Store/Local Shop of the Year 2019 at the Farm Shop & Deli Awards. We wanted to discover how winning this award had helped them so talked to Kath Campbell to find out what’s been happening over the last few months.

What makes your shop special or different to others?

As well as a supermarket we have in-store butchery and delicatessen counters and on our second floor you will find virtually every major wine producing region in the world is represented in our wine and spirits department. We also have around 100+ gins and 200+ whisky’s – many of which are available to sample!

How did your staff feel when they heard you were a Farm Shop & Deli Award winner?

Our staff were delighted – it’s a real achievement to be shortlisted let alone to win the award. We have a great team of staff and this award really acknowledges the hard work and dedication to the business that our staff put in.

Which three words would you use to describe your shop?

Oh, that is hard.

1. Independent – We are extremely proud to be an independent retailer in this sector and as such we do as much as we can to support other, often local, independent and small businesses by stocking their products where possible.
2. Welcoming – Our staff are all local and we know all of our regular customers by their names and we really do feel as though we are part of their lives – for some of our customers a trip to the supermarket provides the only interaction they’ll have in a day. We also actively encourage conversation with visitors and we are no stranger to passing on recommendations for places to visit!
3. Choice – we cater for all budgets and tastes as we stock value through to top of the range lines.

Retailers like you are often at the heart of communities, tell us about some of the things you do to support your local community.

We support local sports teams through sponsorship and we also donate prizes for raffles and events regularly and we donate all of the money from our carrier bag sales to local charities. We take telephone orders from our customers who are unable to get in to the shop and we deliver to them weekly – this is a lifeline for some of our older customers who are unable to get out to do their own shopping.

What did your customers think to the news about your award win?

Our customers were extremely congratulatory on our award. When we shared the news on social media we had so many people interacting with us to tell us how pleased they were. That was lovey as it brought a fresh wave of pride reading all of the lovely things people had to say about us!

How did you celebrate winning the award?

I was at the awards ceremony with my daughter who is currently undertaking a retail apprenticeship in the shop. We had a meal and of course a few glasses of bubbly after the ceremony as we were fortunate enough to be staying over. It was great to be able to share such a special moment with my daughter – hopefully inspiring the future generation of Campbells!

Tell us about some of the PR opportunities this award has generated for you.

Since winning the award we have had PR opportunities with newspapers and social media channels from around our region. We have drawn interest from a far wider area. Also, winning the award has put us on the map as a destination thanks to the PR from the Farm Shop & Deli awards marketing team.

What does winning awards like this mean to you?

Winning this award brings confirmation we are getting things right. It’s a great feeling to have a panel of extremely talented people judge you and decide that you’re doing a great job. The feedback was brilliant and you could tell that the judges really had taken time to get to know our store.

What do you love most about working in this industry?

Everything! Retail is a highly competitive market and it is difficult for an independent store like ours to survive particularly when we don’t have the buying power of our competitors but we are succeeding. We have some wonderfully loyal customers and we also attract lots of visitors all of whom are very complimentary about our store. Many customers comment that they would like us to open up another store closer to them!

Have you got any projects you are working on or plans for development you would like to share?

We have recently had a replacement butchery counter installed and we are now working on our range of fresh ready meals which are proving very popular. We will continue with our wine tasting programme as through this we attract some extremely big names in the wine making industry.

Why should retailers enter the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2020?

The year before we won this award we were entered and shortlisted but did not win. We took onboard the judges’ comments and some of them helped to improve our business so we then came back and won the award. It is an amazing feeling to receive recognition for the hard work of our whole team.
