Arthur Howell talks about his Farm Shop & Deli Awards win
We caught up with 2016 Retailer of the Year, Arthur Howell to find out about what winning meant to him and his businesses. He also shares his advice for those entering this year.
What is so special about the Farm Shop & Deli industry?
I think it’s so special because it enables people to sample produce from all around the world as well as local produce. If we can't purchase products locally we try and find the very best from across the world if that's what the customer wants. The industry is a great showcase for all food produce, whether it’s locally sourced from on your doorstep or obtained from thousands of miles away.
How did you feel when you found out you had won the award?
Apart from shocked and stunned, I was absolutely overcome with emotion. It was a great achievement and it made me feel very proud of my family and all my staff who helped me achieve the award.
Why did you decide to enter these awards?
I feel very strongly that all independent retailers need a good platform to show off how good they are and what they can offer and the Farm Shop & Deli Awards, from previous experience, is the very best platform to do this.
How has winning helped your business?
Customers have been coming into our shops from all around our region to see what we have to offer. Winning the award has brought the privilege of local press, magazine and radio coverage and made us a real talking point regionally. It has been a great morale boost for us as a family and for our staff.
What advice would you give to those considering entering?
Be passionate and strive to be the best at what you do. Train your staff well so they know as much about the produce you sell as you do and can talk about it enthusiastically. Enjoy your job and allow your staff to have input as they are on the front line and are very important to the running and success of your business. You must allow your staff to enjoy what they do so as to bring out the best in them.
