Congratulations to Keelham Farm Shop, the Farm Shop & Deli Retailer of the Year
Victoria Robertshaw, Co-Owner of Keelham Farm Shop collecting the 2017 Retailer of the Year Award from Chair of Judges Nigel Barden and 2016 winner Arthur Howell.
Keelham Farm Shop, based in Skipton, impressed this year’s expert panel of judges to win the coveted Farm Shop & Deli 2017 Retailer of the Year Award. Beating off the competition from the broad scope of excellence in independent fine food retail nationwide, Keelham cleaned up by taking home the award for Farm Shop of the Year – Large Retailer, the North East regional award and the overall Retailer of the Year.
The award was announced and presented to Victoria Robertshaw by Nigel Barden, food journalist and Chair of this year’s judges, on Monday 24th April at the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2017, which took place at NEC Birmingham. Also presenting the award was 2016 Retailer of the Year and a member of this year’s judging panel, butcher, Arthur Howell.
The robust judging process is managed by a panel of food industry experts that included the likes of Chairman of the Judges, food critic, journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden; acclaimed food and drink writer, chef and Co-Chair of the Judges, Elaine Lemm; Iain Hemming, Owner, Thyme and Tides and Editor of British Baker magazine, Vince Bamford.
What makes Keelham Farm Shop a worthy winner
As part of the judging process customers were invited to comment on the company, and here are just some of the comments Keelham Farm Shop received:
“Great fresh produce – caters for all needs.”
“This shop is a gem with a wonderful selection of quality food, at reasonable price.”
“A pleasure to shop and eat here.”
Our judging panel also commented:
“Quirky, fun – a great thriving business.”
“Very Yorkshire, great concept, fabulous use of local producers.”
“Particularly like the time spend educating staff and customers.”
“Exemplary customer focus – growing and responding to customer needs.”
“Social media presence fantastic.”
Chair of Judges, Nigel Barden added: “Keelham Farm Shop has been a remarkable success story with the almost purpose built Skipton outlet (it was a former garage) working in tandem with the original Thornton shop, which opened 40 years ago on the family farm. Employing 320 people, Keelham offers a huge variety of produce from 400 Yorkshire suppliers for local shoppers and many who have travelled from far further afield.
It’s staggering that in the Skipton store, 50,000 bottles of beer are sold annually, but that figure is eclipsed by the number of drinks served at their juice bar, 20% of which are green in colour! Fresh food sales are the key to both stores, with the butchery, bakery, fruit and veg and deli departments being outstanding. Combine that with energy self-sufficiency through wind turbines and solar power, and you have a slick, professional set-up, underpinned by cheerful Yorkshire service, expertise and of course excellent produce. Victoria and James Robertshaw, and your team, please take a bow."
