From the 24th to 26th April 2017, around 4,000 visitors and over 450 exhibitors celebrated the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2017. From the moment the doors opened, thousands of retailers and small business owners flocked through the door, eager to learn from the industry experts and suppliers who were on hand to share advice, innovation and knowledge.

Speaking at the show was presenter and columnist, Saira Khan who also inspired retailers at the main stage with her sound advice on engaging with consumers. Her passion and drive for helping small business owners was evident as she spoke to exhibitors and retailers about her experience of growing a business, with practical tips that could easily be implemented back at the office.

Other highlights at the stage on day one included Richard Fox and his expert panel discussing food waste and how it can boost profits, whilst Tom and Henry Herbert from Hobbs House Bakery attracted the audience with their loaf masterclass.

The much-anticipated Britain’s Best Loaf was also judged live at the show in association with British Baker and Rank Hovis. Bakers from all corners of the UK brought their best sourdough, wholegrain, white, innovative or gluten free offerings before the judges. Yorkshire-based, Seasons Bakery claimed the overall title with its innovative Beetroot Multiseed Sourdough loaf.

After a busy first day hundreds of visitors gathered at the stage to listen to the announcements of the annual Farm Shop & Deli Awards. Categories ranged from butcher to cheesemonger to online businesses and included the overall winner of Retailer of the Year. This was presented to Keelham Farm Shop from Skipton in Yorkshire who picked up three awards from the prestigious event.

Pulling in the crowds on the second day was cheese expert and award-winning author Patricia Michelson, who demonstrated how to maximise sales through a superior display in-store. Paul Hargreaves, CEO of Cotswold Fayre talked about the essential skills for harnessing people power with the aim of empowering retailers and producers to go back to their businesses and put new ideas and vision into practice.

Four business owners braved the first Dragon's Pantry where they had five minutes to pitch to eight industry experts before facing a further five minutes of questioning. The ‘dragons’ chose Great British Biscotti as their first winner.

The Farm Shop & Deli Show organisers held a new event for 2017, which was open to exhibitors, visitors and speakers after day two of the show. Guests were invited to relax and unwind at the After Party where they could enjoy a fun evening of comedy, entertainment, food and drink.

For the final day, the engaging speaker list continued starting with a digital focus from both Charlie Turnbull, from Turnbulls and Karen Fewell, founder of Digital Blonde Ltd. Visitors could also learn about beer essentials with Melissa Cole and Richard Fox.

Wednesday also saw the climax of the Dragon's Pantry with five different businesses talking about their new and exciting products. It involved further tough questioning from the ‘dragons’ alongside sound advice that will help direct and drive businesses forward.Traditional Indian snack, Karkli was announced as the winner of this second instalment with Great British Biscotti being crowned the overall winner by the judges.

Before the doors closed at the NEC, Farm Shop & Deli Show Exhibition Sales Director, Dan Dixon revealed the winners of the Great New Idea Award. Over the last few months, exhibitors could enter and receive votes for new and innovative products with the top three and overall winner being selected by industry experts. Healthy snack company, Innate Food was announced as the 2017 winner with the Froze POPS popsicle and Fori savoury snack bar being revealed as the runners-up.

Innate Food founders, Elsa Valentine and Tess Walker believe that food is a combination of art, science and maths. With a vision for putting health back into snack foods, they developed the Innate range of colourful snack squares that are not only good for you but taste delicious too.

The dates for the next Farm Shop & Deli Show have been announced and will take place at the Birmingham NEC from the 16th to 18th April 2018. It will run alongside Food & Drink Expo, National Convenience Show, Foodex and the Food Ingredients Show.
