Congratulations to Johns of Instow & Appledore, the Retailer of the Year
North Devon based delicatessen Johns of Instow & Appledore has beaten off over 500 nationwide fine food businesses to be named the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2015’s ‘Retailer of the Year’.
The award was announced and presented to owners Sue and Anthony Johns by Nigel Barden, food journalist and Chair of this year’s judges, at the Farm Shop & Deli Show 2015, at the NEC Birmingham, on Monday 20 April. The robust judging process is managed by a panel of food industry experts that included the likes of Chairman of the Judges, food critic, journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden; acclaimed food and drink writer, chef and Co-Chair of the Judges, Elaine Lemm; Juliet Harbutt, cheese expert and chairman of the British Cheese Awards; and Ross Gilfillan, editor of Speciality Food.
Johns of Instow & Appledore started as a family business in the 1940s, and is today run by the fourth generation of the Johns family. The company has two shops in North Devon, one in the village of Instow and the other in the village of Appledore. Both shops include a full delicatessen, butcher, and wine shop. In 2012 they opened the Johns’ Café at the Appledore shop that offers a delicious seasonal menu based on local produce that is either made in house or by carefully sourced producers.
As part of the judging process customers were invited to comment on the company and some of the comments are below:
“Quality local foods supporting local industry. Good atmosphere and delightful staff that make a wonderful eating experience.”
“It's such a pleasure to shop at Johns. Everyone who comes to stay with us takes a range of products back with them and for my father in law to admit that it's the best meat he has tasted is a first!! The quality of the food is high as is the customer service. It's our equivalent to Fortnum & Masons.”
Johns of Instow & Appledore is completely dedicated to steering the company in a ‘hands-on’ way with an enthusiastic team and loyal customer, both in the local community and visitors. Its success has seen the two shops become a regular foodie destination promoting locally produced food on the North Devon coastline.
“It was probably the most special day in our lives. We walked up to the stage to collect our award with emotions of absolute joy and disbelief, with compliments ringing in our ears from our loyal customers and expert judges as they were read out. Just incredible, it’s what dreams are made of! Thank you to everyone for your valued support, our dedicated team, our faithful customers and talented local producers, as without you there wouldn’t be a Johns of Instow & Appledore. The beautifully carved wooden boards will take pride of place in our two delis! Let the celebrations begin!”
Johns of Instow & Appledore - Retailer of the Year 2015
“Johns of Instow & Appledore are integral to their North Devon communities and a real jewel of a find to those travelling from further afield. They are brilliant examples of a local shop, offering a complete one-stop offer. Johns provide a friendly, well-informed service, with a marvellous array of, wherever possible, locally sourced ingredients. It’s the type of business that others should strive to be like.”
Nigel Barden, Chairman of Judges and Food and Drink Journalist/Broadcaster
"Without doubt, choosing an overall winner from the outstanding 2015 Awards line-up was all but impossible. Ultimately, the choice was not just for a worthy winner but an enterprise that embodies the excellence of farm shops and delis in the UK today. The unanimous agreement of the judges demonstrates that Johns of Instow & Appledore is that business and justly deserves the accolade of Retailer of the Year."
Elaine Lemm, the Co-Chair of Judges and Food Writer
