FARM SHOP & DELI AWARDS CELEBRATES THE WIN OF JOHNS OF INSTOW AND APPLEDORE, RETAILER OF THE YEAR 2015
In the Farm Shop and Deli Awards, there can only be one overall winner, the Retailer of the Year. For 2015, that accolade belongs to Johns of Instow and Appledore, a 4th generation grocers in Devon. Throughout the judging process, there was much praise of husband and wife team Anthony and Sue Johns and their two impressive stores. But, what was it that had so impressed the judges and made Johns stand out from the hundreds of other entries. Only a visit could tell, so both the judges and the team from FSDA headed to North Devon to find out.
The picture-postcard towns of Instow and Appledore share the same staggering location and commanding views but from opposite sides of the Torridge Estuary. With the tides allowing, staff from Johns can take the short ferry ride back and forth across the river enjoying the views, of which no-one could ever tire surely.
Anthony's great-great grandmother founded the original store at Instow in the 1940's in what is now the local pub, eventually moving a few doors down to its current location. The store bursts with over 500 baked, deli, fresh and ambient goods from both local and regional suppliers.
Instow also boasts a charming beach hut, a few hundred yards away. Here it is possible to find probably the best coffee in the area, local ice creams and the ubiquitous buckets, spades, and fishing nets. There is an ordering service for the freshly made baguettes and miniature cream teas that are then made at the shop and delivered to the hut, meaning holidaymakers never need leave the beach. Just one of the touches that endear Johns to locals and visitors alike.
Appledore is not unlike the original Instow shop but with a cafe, and a few doors down, in what was once the Co-Op, they have a general store run in partnership with Londis. Here there are general everyday supplies with keen prices, best-buys and special offers in abundance. Perfect for the holiday cottage trade and for locals to do their shopping.
Undoubtedly Appledore and Instow are seasonal destinations and though flooded with tourists in the summer, local trade is paramount to sustain business year round. "Passing trade is not enough," says Sue " the local tradesmen who come in every day for food and enjoy a little banter with the shop staff are just as vital to us. Both stores have post office counters that, though not easy for us, are a valuable service to the community. ”
Anthony proudly boasts that encouraging people to shop with us rather than at the supermarket is just one of the spin-offs to winning the National Retailer Award. "The publicity from winning has not just been good for Johns; it has brought publicity to Appledore, to Instow and Devon, " he says. Sharing the love is clearly important to him, and it doesn't stop there. The smiles all round from the staff at Johns show they are also basking in the glory and proud of working for an award-winning store. Both Sue and Anthony openly attribute much of their success to them.
The accolade and glory of winning do not mean the Johns are about to sit on their laurels anytime soon. Though organic, steady growth is their approach there is the talk of a potential third store. In addition to the stores they also now offer a catering service and having sampled a selection of their offering at lunch, it looks like they are on their way to yet another success.
